Museum-Estate “Arkhangelskoye”, Moscow Region

About the project

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Arkhangelskoye’s museum activity, Wowhaus developed a comprehensive master plan for the estate’s long-term development. The strategy sets a phased approach to transformation and integrates all land parcels of Arkhangelskoye into a single structure adapted for museum use.

  • Comprehensive Strategy for the Estate’s Future

The areas surrounding Arkhangelskoye are being actively urbanized. New residential blocks will inevitably increase visitor flows, making it crucial to expand hospitality infrastructure and protect the estate’s historic core today.

  • Safeguarding and Enriching the Heritage

Our proposal outlines a system of measures, including the restoration of historic park pavilions and the creation of new cultural and recreational venues delicately embedded into the natural and architectural landscape.

  • Balancing Preservation and Growth

The strategic plan introduces essential new functions:
    – Museum infrastructure (storage facilities, administrative buildings, restoration workshops)
    – Educational and cultural amenities (lecture hall, open-air spaces for small-scale events)
    – Visitor services (welcome center, cafés, restrooms, souvenir shops)

  • Botanical Greenhouses

Based on historical and scientific research, we proposed to reconstruct the lost environment by restoring the first line of the Botanical Greenhouses. These will house temporary exhibition halls, an educational center, and a screening hall.

  • New Pavilions

All new buildings follow a unified design code, complementing without overwhelming the historic and natural setting. Key principles of the design code are symmetry, transparency, and proportion. Facades are rhythmical, and color palettes remain restrained.

  • Lokhin Island

A distinctive challenge in merging nature and culture was Lokhin Island, a protected natural reserve. It is home to endangered plants and rare birds, as well as archaeological sites of the Neolithic, Volosovo, and Lyalovo cultures. For the island, we designed a zoning system with different levels of accessibility, opening the site to visitors while carefully regulating access, visitor numbers, and movement routes. These solutions were developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Ecology and Environmental Management of the Moscow Region.
