CHILDREN’S EDUCATIONAL CENTER, DERBENT

About the project

A new type of learning environment fosters the child’s all-round development and full interaction with peers. The concept for the center’s appearance was preceded by a study of traditional local architectural elements, the specifics of working in the southern climate, the character of low-rise local architecture, and typical open courtyard systems.

  • For the Child and the Family

After analyzing the context, the Wowhaus team understood that the center’s users would include not only teenagers, but also adults. The studio proposed creating public spaces equally suited for educational activities and family events.

  • Open / Closed

The concept envisions several levels of access, allowing children and adults to participate in joint events while ensuring a safe environment where children can be without parents when needed.

  • Education for a New World

To encourage the comprehensive development of teenagers, the center will feature a crafts and future arts hub, as well as infrastructure for biomedical, environmental, and Tech studies. The educational complex will include an eco-technology garden with ornamental and medicinal plants, an observatory, an inner learning courtyard, workshops, laboratories, and creative studios.

  • Sustainable Development

Since eco-technology training is a key part of the curriculum, the authors felt it was essential for the educational center itself to be built in line with modern principles of resource efficiency and sustainability. Therefore, regional materials—especially stone—were chosen with consideration for the local climate. The concept also provides for efficient water use and solar energy collection, particularly relevant in the high-insolation conditions of Dagestan.
