Ecopolis on Sakhalin Island

  • Conservation of Resources

The fundamental task of the Ecopolis is to preserve economic and social resources within the region so that the Sakhalin region can transform from a resource-supplying territory into a self-developing one. One of the main drivers of this transformation will be the modernization of the port.

  • Green Principle

A smart city and green technologies form the core principle of the new city’s development. Currently, the island’s economy is based on the extraction of non-renewable energy sources. We propose transforming this system into a production-and-distribution chain by minimizing the transportation of natural resources and maximizing waste processing.

  • Dynamic City

The city’s dynamism will be shaped by diverse urban spaces, a multicultural community, and a variety of public functions. Wowhaus proposed the creation of three urban clusters. They are a science and production cluster, a cultural and educational cluster, and a cultural and business cluster. Each of them is unique in terms of typology, architecture, and functionality.

  • Ocean Museum

One of the landmark projects forming the city’s identity will be the Ocean Museum. It will connect the urban area with the waterfront. The museum’s main hall will be located underwater, with the ocean itself becoming the centerpiece of the exhibition.

  • Runway as an Event Square

Another symbol of the city is proposed on the basis of a major urban landmark. That is an abandoned airstrip. The runway is a part of the region’s historical heritage, and it is important to preserve it in its nearly original state. It will become the main event square of the Ecopolis. The surrounding area is envisioned as a prospective zone for urban growth and development.

  • Urban and Natural Waterfront

The waterfront is divided into two main zones: an urban part with its own harbor, business center, residential complexes, hotels, and a cultural cluster; as well as a natural waterfront with a beach, sports infrastructure, pavilions, and observation decks. Slightly offshore, an artificial island formed from rock material is proposed. Located opposite the beach, the island will serve as a breakwater.

  • Green Corridors

The forests surrounding the Ecopolis will become part of the city’s fabric. Ecological corridors, green public spaces, will cut through the city. The central park with an ocean view will remain an untouched natural environment, with construction limited to its perimeter.

  • Sakhalin Tech

The science and production cluster will be an innovative research and industrial park operating on a regional and national scale. “Sakhalin Tech” is a technopark that integrates an institute, residential buildings, and production facilities, combining scientific research with a comfortable living environment. The university is the heart of the city. Its buildings are arranged on a slope, ensuring that each block offers views over different parts of the park.
