About the project
Maryino and Kapotnya had long been known as polluted industrial districts of the capital, with few opportunities for outdoor recreation. The first step in transforming these areas was the creation of the 850th Anniversary of Moscow Park, stretching along the river. Later, it was extended by the riverside park in Kapotnya.

A Wasteland Becomes a Park
The embankment park in Kapotnya, despite its status as a specially protected natural area, had long been in a neglected state. Due to its proximity to the Moscow Oil Refinery, power lines, and an oil pipeline, the waterfront remained underused and littered. The challenge was to transform what looked like an exclusion zone, yet it was actively used by local residents, into a modern, safe, and comfortable green space. Wowhaus demonstrated that even in an industrial zone, it is possible to create a vibrant public space that people value and enjoy.
-
Green Intervention
The new park was designed as a local space, aimed primarily at neighborhood residents. It was a place where they could take walks, socialize, play sports, and simply relax on the weekend. One of the key features of the site is its zoning, which takes into account all the constraints of the area, including the proximity of the oil pipeline, the existing terrain, and the natural vegetation.
-
Nature, City, Human
The new park became something between an urban recreational area and a suburban forest park. Its functions are dispersed across the site, as it is typical out of the city, with each part of the park gradually flowing into the next.
-
Restoration of the Wetland Ecosystem
The problematic area was a flood-prone wetland that had previously been excluded from the pedestrian route. During the park’s creation, the wetland was cleaned, water-loving plants were planted, and boardwalks were installed. This introduced an eco-trail with observation decks into the park.

Participatory Design
When designing, the studio always takes into account existing informal traditions and the wishes of local residents.
For example, the residents of Kapotnya have long enjoyed having picnics and grilling BBQ by the river.
That’s why the concept included designated fire pits and picnic tables.
