Krymskaya Embankment

About the project

Krymskaya Embankment became the first contemporary public space in Moscow and Russia. The project’s success sparked interest in urban environment development and initiated transformation processes in the capital and other cities across the country. The reconstruction of Krymskaya Embankment was carried out at the bureau’s own initiative.

  • Walking in the City

An underused four-lane road along the embankment was transformed into an all-season park. Krymskaya Embankment became an extension of the 10-kilometer pedestrian and cycling route that begins at Vorobyovy Gory. The area now features pedestrian and bicycle paths, artificial hills and ponds, urban furniture, and pavilions. They all are united by the fluid design motif of a wave.

  • New Methods

Krymskaya Embankment was the first in Russia to introduce modern landscaping techniques that had not been widely used before: geoplastics, perennial planting, dry (basinless) fountains, dedicated infrastructure for cyclical sports, and the planting of large trees using root aeration technology.

  • Part of the City

Krymskaya Embankment is conventionally divided into four zones: the under-bridge space, the Artists’ Zone with the “Vernissage” pavilion, the Fountain Square, and the Green Hills. All zones are designed with consideration for how they are perceived from the water and the opposite riverbank.

  • Transit under the Bridge

The transit space beneath Krymsky Bridge has become both an attraction and a cozy shelter from bad weather: it now features a stage, two wooden amphitheaters, and internally lit benches that help organize the flow of pedestrians and cyclists.

  • First in Russia

The central feature of the park is the Fountain Square. The dry fountain forms a unified light composition with the lime tree alley, the main visual effect being the interplay between the color-dynamic lighting of the fountain jets and the underlighting of the linden trees.

  • Composition

In the eastern part, there are numerous recreation spots. When designing this area, special attention was given to artificial terrain and landscaping. Two types of artificial hills were created: ones for walking and lounging, covered with ornamental grass lawns, and others for contemplation and admiration, planted with trees and shrubs.
